From Still Life to Sprouting Surprise: Where Botany and Art Flourish in Bottle & Branch

A Green-Thumbed Twist on a Botanical Art Collection

A flourishing tale for art enthusiasts and plant lovers alike! I want to share a story about the unexpected turn my latest collection, Bottle & Branch, has taken. It all began with a simple idea: capturing the beauty of found branches through art. But as the project unfolded, nature added its creative twist, blurring the lines between artistic inspiration and botanical experiment.

Simple Beginnings for Branches in Bottles

My Bottle & Branch journey started with bits and bobs of branches lying around my garden. Drawn to their natural shapes and colours, I placed them in various glass containers – vases, bottles, jars – that graced my studio surfaces. These "still life" arrangements became the subjects of my drawings and paintings.

Unexpected Bounty from a Local Hero

As the project gained momentum, I ventured beyond my garden for inspiration. One chilly February day, I encountered a local hero – a friendly gardener diligently trimming a row of common box hedges. With his kind understanding, I collected some discarded cuttings, little suspecting their hidden potential.

Branches Become Budding Beauties

Back in the studio, the branches found new life in their glass homes. But the story doesn't end there. Imagine my surprise when, after a few weeks, I noticed green shoots peeking out from the cuttings! Delicate roots had begun to weave their way through the clear water. My studio had become an impromptu botanical haven, and my artistic focus shifted alongside these unexpected guests.

Warm Studios and Artistic Inspiration

Through the glazed doors, the studio's warmth and light seemed to agree with the cuttings. As they flourished, their rich, waxy leaves and graceful curves fuelled my artistic fire. Countless sketches, expressive studies, and vibrant paintings emerged, all inspired by these resilient little branches. Through this process, I developed a deeper understanding of their growth patterns and subtle details, enhancing my artistic connection to the natural world.

Green Fingers Put to the Test: From Studio to Garden

Always embracing a garden experimentation or two, I decided to give my "green fingers" a workout. Early one spring morning, I carefully potted the now-sprouting branches. A vacant corner of a flower bed, previously occupied by a long-gone ceanothus, seemed like the perfect new home. Determined and excited, I prepped the soil, dug a hole, and planted the most prominent branch. Watering, feeding, and watching will become my new routine to see if the specimen enjoys its new home.

A Flourishing Symbiosis

The smaller cuttings have found their haven in cute pots, nestled beside my studio door on an old sleeper. While their fate remains unwritten, I can't help but imagine them flourishing alongside the paintings they inspired. It's a beautiful reminder of the resilience of nature and the unexpected ways art can take root in our lives.
